Description
This is a traditional Tepehuan story, part of their rich oral literature. It serves as entertainment and as an explanation of how the world began. The text was narrated in the 1970's by a resident of La Guajalota, a small town seven kilometers from the ceremonial Santa María Ocotán community. The transcription, which is a slightly edited version of the original narration, was made by a resident of Santa María soon after it was recorded.
The form of presentation is called “glossed text,” because it includes both literal translations of every word and morpheme and free translations of every sentence. The free translations are summarized in paragraph form at the end.
