Malmstrom, Marilyn

Marilyn E. Malmstrom is an International Vernacular Media Consultant with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. She has had years of experience in both the programming and production of vernacular media tools, predominately in countries in Asia and Africa. She received a B.Sc. in Education from Ball State University in 1963.

Malone, Susan

Susan Malone is an international literacy consultant with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. Prior to this assignment, she did fieldwork with SIL in Papua New Guinea (1980-1994) as literacy specialist and literacy consultant, specializing in program planning and training. She also worked with the PNG Department of Education helping to develop the government's national literacy program. Malone received an M.A. in Missiology from Fuller Theological Seminary in 1988, and she is completing a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership and Policy Studies at Indiana University in Bloomington.

Marsch, Angelika

Angelika Marsch is doing fieldwork as a literacy specialist with the Summer Institute of Linguistics in Peru (1987-present). Marsch received an M.A. in Special Education from "Justus-Liebig" University in Gleason, Germany, in 1977.

Matthews, Delle P.

Delle P. Matthews is Associate Principal and Literacy Professor at the Summer Institute of Linguistics, Australia. Prior to taking this position, she did fieldwork with SIL in Indonesia (1985-1991) and worked as a literacy specialist (Yale Language Project) and literacy coordinator. Matthews received an M.A. in Applied Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1984.

Maxwell, Mike

Mike Maxwell is an International Linguistic Consultant with the Summer Institute of Linguistics, and is assigned to the International Linguistics Department. He previously served as a linguistics consultant in Ecuador and in Colombia. He received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of Washington in 1984.

McConnel, Stephen R.

Stephen McConnel is a software developer with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He joined the organization in 1983 after working for two years as a (Visiting) Assistant Professor of Electrical Engineering at Georgia Tech. He received an SB in Computer Science and Engineering from MIT in 1976, and a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from Carnegie-Mellon University in 1981.

McKendry, Inga

Inga McKendry has worked with SIL as a translator/linguist for the Santo Domingo Nuxaa Mixteco language of Mexico. She received her B.Div. from the University of London in 1983, and her linguistics training from SIL in Britain and the U.S.

Miller, Carolyn P.

Carolyn Miller has worked as a linguist with the Malaysia Branch of the Summer Institute of Linguistics.

Moore, Barbara

Barbara J. Moore is the International Anthropology Coordinator for the Summer Institute of Linguisitics (Dallas, TX). Prior to taking this position, she did field work with SIL in Colombia (1965-1976), Brazil (1976-1981) and Cote d'Ivoire (1986-1994). She received a Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of California at Davis in 1990.

Morgan, Mary

Mary Morgan joined SIL in 1964, and has worked as a literacy consultant with International Administration. She received her M.A. in Linguistics in 1977, and her PhD in Sociolinguistics in 1980, both from Georgetown University.

Munger, Jennifer

Jennifer Munger joined SIL in 1982 and worked with SIL in the Former Soviet Union as a linguist. She received her linguistics training at Texas SIL in the 1980's.

Nida, Eugene A.

Eugene Nida received a PhD in Linguistics in 1943 from the University of Michigan. He was Professor of Linguistics at SIL, 1937-53, mostly at the University of Oklahoma. He was Executive Secretary for Translations for the American Bible Society, 1943-84. He was a consultant for the United Bible Societies 1947-90, and continues as a consultant to the American Bible Society, 1984 to present. He has done field work in over 85 countries in over 200 languages, and has published many books and articles.

O'Bar, Dave

Dave O'Bar received his B.S. in Aeronautical and Aerospace Engineering and German from Stanford University in 1974. He spent his junior year of college as an exchange student in Germany. Following 15 years at the Boeing Corporation, Dave joined SIL and worked in management positions, including director of the LinguaLinks development project.

Orwig, Carol J.

Carol J. Orwig is the coordinator for language learning training within the Academic training section of Academic Affairs of the Summer Institute of Linguistics (Dallas, TX). Prior to taking this position she did field work in Mexico and Cameroon. She has been with SIL since 1973. She has frequently taught courses in second language acquisition in Dallas, Oregon, England, Cameroon and Mexico. She received an M. A. in linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1986.

Payne, David L.

David Payne is an International Linguistic Consultant with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. Besides his ongoing research in the languages of Peru, he has also been the International Linguistics Coordinator. He received his Ph. D. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin in 1978.

Persons, Dave

Dave Persons worked with SIL as a translator/linguist for the Lachixio Zapoteco language of Mexico. He received his B.A. from Calvary Bible College in 1967, and linguistic training in 1967-68 at the University of North Dakota.

Porter, Doris

Doris Porter is an International Program Planning Consultant with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. She has done field work in the Philippines branch of SIL (27 years), and served as the International Sociolinguistics Coordinator of SIL. She received a B.A. in Elementary Education from Biola University in 1956.

Purnell, Herbert C.

Herbert Purnell is professor and chair of the Department of TESOL & Applied Linguistics at Biola University (La Mirada, CA). Prior to taking this position he did field work and linguistic consulting in Thailand with OMF International, as well as curriculum development and workshop presentations on language learning in East and Southeast Asia. He received a Ph.D. in linguistics from Cornell University in 1970.

Radloff, Carla F.

Carla F. Radloff is currently serving in the West Eurasia Group as a language survey specialist. She has also conducted language surveys in Pakistan. She received an M.Sc. in Communicative Disorders from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1972.

Ray, Michael

Mike Ray is a Team Development Consultant with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He worked with the Australian Aborigines and Islander Branch in a language project and administration from 1975-1987. He received his MA in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1981, and his MA in Human Resource Development from Azusa Pacific University in 1991.

Rempel, Robin

Robin Rempel is Assistant Professor of Applied Linguistics (Principles of Literacy) at the University of Arlington and the Summer Institute of Linguistics. Prior to taking this position, she did fieldwork with SIL in Papua New Guinea (1986-1995) where she was a literacy specialist and itinerant literacy consultant. Rempel received a B.S. from Multonomah Bible College in 1984 and is currently working on an M.A. degree at Azusa Pacific University in California.

Rensch, Calvin R.

Calvin R Rensch is the Asia Area Director of the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He has done language research in Mexico and South Asia and has taught linguistics courses in both North America and Asia for SIL. He holds a Ph.D. in linguistics from University of Pennsylvania.

Rensch, Carolyn M.

Carolyn Rensch has worked with SIL as a translator for one of the Chinantec languages of Mexico. She completed her B.A. at Dickinson College in 1954, the same year that she joined SIL. She received her linguistics training from SIL in Norman, OK in 1954-55.

Ring, J. Andrew

J. Andy Ring works in language resource development under the Ghana Institute of Linguistics, Literacy, and Bible Translation in West Africa. Over the last 20 years, Andy has documented the language use patterns of many of Ghana's lesser studied language communities and specialized in literature development for languages in the Volta Region. Andy holds a Ph.D. in Sociolinguistics from Georgetown University (1987).

Robinson, Clinton D. W.

Clinton D.W. Robinson is the Director of Literacy and Development Liaison Unit for the Summer Institute of Linguistics, United Kingdom. Prior to taking this position, he did fieldwork and was the SIL Director in Cameroon. Robinson received a Ph.D. in Language use in rural development from the University of Reading, UK, in 1991.

Savage, Dale

Dale Savage is currently working on the Tarascan Survey with the Mexico Branch of the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He has been involved in language survey in Central America and Asia since 1981, and has trained surveyors and served as a linguistic consultant with SIL in North America, Central America, and Papua New Guinea. He holds his MA in linguistics from the University of Texas at Austin.

Schooling, Stephen J.

Stephen Schooling carried out a sociolinguistic survey in New Caledonia in 1982. He received an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Texas, Arlington in 1985.

Schrag, Brian E.

Brian Schrag is an ethnomusicologist and linguistic consultant with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He began a language project among the Mono people of northwestern Democratic Republic of the Congo from 1992-1995. He received his MA in Intercultural Studies and Ethnomusicology from Wheaton College in 1987, and in 1998 began working toward a Ph.D. in Ethnomusicology from the University of California, Los Angeles.

Shaler, Dorothy

Dorothy Shaler is a retired ethnomusicologist with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. She worked as a Medical Technician in the Yarinacocha Clinic in Peru from 1960-1965 and then did fieldwork in Peru until 1983 on Pajonal Campa (Arawakan). She was the assistant editor of the Journal of Translation and Textlinguistics at the International Linguistics Center in Dallas, Texas until she went to Kenya in 1993. There she was first an editor and then did ethnomusicology in Sudan until 1996. She received her Masters in Intercultural Communication with a concentration in Ethnomusicology from Wheaton College Graduate School in 1985.

Showalter, Catherine J.

Catherine J. Showalter has worked as a linguist in Burkina Faso with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. She holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Georgetown University.

Showalter, Stuart D.

Stewart Showalter is the Sociolinguistics Coordinator of the Burkina FasoBranch of the Summer Institute of Linguistics, where he also works as a linguist with the Kaansa language. He has worked with this project since 1987, overseeing survey work and developing survey materials. He holds a Ph.D. in Linguistics from Georgetown University.

Sim, Ronald J.

Ronald Sim has worked as a linguist in Eastern Africa with the Summer Institute of Linguistics, including survey work in Kenya, language projects in Ethiopia, and most recently directing the training of African linguists in Nairobi. He holds a Ph.D. from Edinburgh University.

Simons, Gary F.

Gary Simons is director of the Academic Computing Department at the Summer Institute of Linguistics (Dallas, Texas). Prior to taking up this post in Dallas, he did field work with SIL in Papura New Guinea (1976) and Solomon Islands (1977-1983). He received a Ph.D. in general linguistics (with minor emphases in computer science and classics) from Cornell University in 1979.

Snyder, Wil

Wil Snyder has worked with SIL as a linguist in Asia. He received an M.S. from Georgia Institute of Technology in 1985, and an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1988.

Southwell, Neville

Neville Southwell is the Pacific Area Director of the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He worked in the Komba Language Program in the Papua New Guinea Branch of SIL from 1964 to 1980 and held administrative roles in the branch from 1981 to 1986.

Stevick, Earl W.

Earl W. Stevick worked for many years at the United States Foreign Service Institute, teaching and developing language courses for people preparing for diplomatic service. He also developed language courses for the Peace Corps. Stevick has published a number of books on language learning and teaching, and following his retirement from the FSI in 1984, taught classes in second language acquisition at the University of Maryland.

Stewart, Trudy K.

Trudy K. Stewart is the senior editor for the LinguaLinks Literacy Workshop. Prior to taking this position, she was part of the Munukutuba literacy team in Congo (1989-1991). Stewart received a B.A. in music and education from Trinity College in Illinois in 1969, and has done graduate studies in linguistics and literacy at the Summer Institute of Linguistics in Dallas, Texas.

Stringer, Mary D.

Mary D. Stringer is an international literacy consultant for the Summer Institute of Linguistics, specializing in the development of community based literacy programs. Prior to this assignment, she did fieldwork with SIL in Papua New Guinea (1962-1995) and worked as literacy specialist and literacy consultant. She taught applied linguistics courses with SIL in Australia, at the University of Texas at Arlington, and at Trinity Western University in Canada. Stringer received a Ph.D. in Education from Macquarie University in Australia in 1995.

Stutzman, Verna

Verna Stutzman is a software developer for LinguaLinks. Prior to her work on LinguaLinks, she did fieldwork in Papua New Guinea. She has a BA in Psychology and an MA in Linguistics from the University of Manitoba, Canada. Her professional interests are in the areas of linguistic field methods, computational linguitics, and language data management.

Sullivan, Nancy

Nancy Sullivan works with SIL in West Africa. Prior to taking this assignment, she spent time in Portugal at language school. She received her B.A. from California State University in 1973, and linguistics training from SIL in Seattle and Dallas beginning in 1979.

Sullivan, Terry

Terry Sullivan works with SIL in West Africa. Prior to taking this assignment, he spent time in Portugal in language study, receiving a diploma from the University of Lisbon in 1985. He received his M.A. in Linguistics from theUniversity of Texas at Arlington in 1982.

Swanson, Jeanne

M. Jeanne Swanson is a Short Term Assistant with SIL, presently assigned to the International Literacy Department in Dallas, TX. Prior to this, she has worked as a community health nurse (1970-1974) and assistant professor of nursing (1979-1983). As an STA with SIL, she has also worked as an instructor of indigenous health promoters in Bolivia and Peru (1972-1976) and as a literacy specialist in Colombia (1991). Swanson received a Ph.D. in Philosophy in the School of Education at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.

Thomas, Barbara

Barbara Thomas is a translator/literacy worker with SIL. She has done fieldwork in Democratic Republic of Congo (formerly Zaire) from 1985-1996. She received her BA in International Studies from Miami University in Oxford, Ohio in 1977.

Thomas, Paul

Paul Thomas is a member of Eastern Congo Group where he serves as Linguistics Coordinator and administrator for the Komo Language Project. He has spent seven years working in the Komo language, a Bantu language of group D. Paul received his MA in Linguistics in 1992 from the University of North Dakota where he specialized in Phonology.

Thomson, Greg

Greg Thomson conducts language learning workshops for international workers in a variety of countries. He has worked with SIL in both North America and Pakistan doing field work, consulting with language learners, and developing a developmental, communicative approach to language learning. He received a M.A. in Linguistics from the University of New Mexico in 1994 and is currently in a Ph.D. program at the University of Alberta.

Trudell, Barbara K.

Barbara K. Trudell is Africa Area Literacy Coordinator for the Summer Institute of Linguistics. Prior to this assignment, she did fieldwork in Peru with SIL (1982-1993), as literacy specialist, consultant and coordinator. She taught applied linguistics (Literacy) with SIL and the University of Texas at Arlington. Trudell received an M.A. in Applied Linguistics (with an Education minor) from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1991.

Van Dyken, Julia R.

Julia R. Van Dyken is presently working with Literacy & Evangelism International as a linguistic and literacy consultant. Prior to this assignment, she was a literacy consultant, did fieldwork in Africa (1964-1995), and was Africa Literacy Training Coordinator with SIL. She taught applied linguistics (Adult Literacy) with SIL and at the University of Texas at Arlington. Van Dyken received a Ph.D. from Indiana University in Bloomington, Indiana.

Van Horne, Marion

Before her retirement, Dr. Van Horne was director of print media and writer training at Intermedia, an agency of the National Council of Churches in New York. She has traveled widely in Asia, Africa, Latin America, and the South Pacific, leading writers' workshops in over 50 countries. She is the author of several books, including two manuals on training writers.

Walker, Roland W.

Roland Walker is currently teaching at the Summer Institute of Linguistics in Dallas, Texas. He was Survey Coordinator in the Indonesia Branch of SIL for 7 years while working in a multilingual language project. He received his Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1987.

Walter, Adelle R.

Adelle R. Walter is a student at BIOLA University in California working towards a B.S. in Studio Art. She has done most of the art work for the LinguaLinks Literacy Workshop.

Walter, Leah B.

Leah B. Walter is coordinator and module author for the LinguaLinks Literacy Workshop. Prior to taking this position, she has done fieldwork in Mexico (Tzeltal language project), Guatemala, and Colombia (1967-1988), as trainer, literacy specialist, literacy consultant and literacy coordinator. She taught applied linguistics (Literacy Principles & Materials) courses with SIL at various universities. Walter received a B.A. from BIOLA University in California in 1966 and has done graduate work in linguistics and adult education.

Walter, Stephen L.

Stephen L. Walter is International Literacy Coordinator for the Summer Institute of Linguistics. Prior to this, he did fieldwork with SIL in Mexico (Tzeltal language project), Guatemala, and Colombia (1969-1988). In this position, he worked as SIL trainer, consultant and workshop coordinator. He has taught Cultural Anthropology, Linguistics and Applied Linguistics (literacy & sociolinguistics) courses with SIL at various universities. He currently serves as an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Linguistics. Walter received a Ph.D. in Applied Linguistics (with minor emphasis in Cultural Anthropology, Experimental Psychology, and Philosophy of Science) from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1980.

Wang, Peter

Peter Wang is a member of the Summer Institute of Linguistics (Dallas, TX). He is on the LinguaLinks (Project ’95) development team, serving as Associate Project Manager and Linguistics Field Manual Developer. Prior to this, he and his wife, Bernice, worked as translator/linguists among the Matigsalug Manobo people in the southern part of the Philippines. Peter received an M. A. in linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1992. Prior to working with SIL, he was a family physician in Alberta, Canada with an M. D. degree from the University of Alberta in 1982.

Waters, Glenys

Glenys Waters is doing fieldwork with the Summer Institute of Linguistics in Papua New Guinea (1989 to present). Prior to taking this position, she did fieldwork in Australia (1975-1989) where she designed literacy materials and programs, and served as literacy consultant, teacher and in adminstrative roles. She taught applied linguistics (Adult Literacy) at SIL and the University of Texas at Arlington (1995) and at SIL in Australia. Waters received a teaching certificate from Frankston Teachers College in Australia and is presently working on an M.Ed. at Latrobe University in Australia.

Watters, John R.

John R. Watters is the Africa Area Director of the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He has done linguistic field work and consultation in Cameroon, Nigeria, and Chad, and has taught linguistics at the University of California at Los Angeles and the University of Yaonde, as well as directed the SIL at the University of Oregon. He received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from UCLA in 1981.

Weber, David J.

David Weber is an International Linguistic Consultant with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. Since 1970 he has been carrying out a program of study and publication in the Quechua language family, particularly the Hualla and Pachitea Quechua languages. He received his Ph.D. in Linguistics from the University of California at Los Angeles in 1983.

Wendell, Margaret M.

A member of SIL since 1949, Margaret Wendell has participated in various aspects of literacy programs in Mexico and Guatemala, serving as field worker, consultant, and coordinator. As an international consultant she directed workshops to train writers of mother tongue literature in various countries of Latin America and Africa. She has also taught writing and held literacy workshops in Asia. During the 24 years she spent at SIL in Dallas, TX, she taught literacy classes, edited Notes on Literacy, and authored Bootstrap Literature. A 1942 graduate of Wheaton College in Dramatic Expression, Wendell earned masters' degrees in Education from Columbia International University (1945) and in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington (1978).

Wetherill, G. Barrie

G. Barrie Wetherill is the Joint National Coordinator, with his wife, of Wycliffe Associates (UK). Prior to taking this position, he was Professor of Statistics at Newcastle (1984-1992), and also Professor at the University of Kent at Canterbury (1973-1984). He received a Ph.D. in Mathematics from the Imperial College of Science and Technology, London in 1957.

Wheatley, James

Jim Wheatley joined SIL in 1959 and has worked as a linguist for the Bakairi language of Brazil. He received his M.A. in Anthropology from State University of New York in 1972.

Wimbish, John S.

John Wimbish is a software designer and department manager with the Summer Institute of Linguistics. He did fieldwork in the Philippines and in Indonesia during the 1980s, during which time he developed the WordSurv and Shoebox computer programs. He received his MA in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1986.

Wimbish, Sandra G.

Sandra G. Wimbish is currently developing online helps for the Language Learning and Linguistics workshops of Lingualinks. She has been a member of SIL since 1986 and has done field work in Indonesia. She received an M.A. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlington in 1991.

Wingate, J. Douglas

Douglas Wingate was a member of the Summer Institute of Linguistics from 1986-1992. He received an M. A. in Linguistics from the University of Texas at Arlingtion in 1991.

Wroge, Diane

Diane Wroge is a literacy coordinator and consultant in Papua New Guinea. Prior to taking this position, she did fieldwork (1983-present) as a literacy specialist and consultant. She received an M.A. in Multilingual/Multicultural Education from Florida State University in 1994.

Zook, Ken

Ken has a BS in Electrical Engineering Technology, and an MA in Linguistics from the University of Colorado, Boulder. He worked with SIL as a radio technologist in the southern Philippines from 1972-1978, and in Manila in all areas of computer support from 1979-1992. Since 1994 he has been working with the Academic Computing Department in Dallas, programming linguistic applications in LinguaLinks and FieldWorks.
