Objectives
 

Here are some cultural framework objectives for Stage 3 for reading:

 
  • To learn more about how people interact with their environment
  • To learn more about different institutions and groups of people within the society and how they relate to each other
  • To find out more about the values and beliefs of people
  • To learn more about the different stages of life and important life passages
  • To learn about symbolic culture represented in literature
  • To learn to match meaning derived from extralinguistic knowledge with that derived from knowledge of the language
Strategies
 

Here are some cultural framework strategies for Stage 3 guidelines for reading:

 
  • Advance organization

    Read pertinent sections of the Themes for sociocultural exploration so you will know what to look for and pay attention to.

  • Analysis

    Analyze semantic domains relevant to the text you read and what they tell you about the cultural framework of the author.

  • Selective attention

    Look for information on specific sociocultural themes in what you read. Note cultural allusions you do not understand, and ask local speakers about them.
