Stage 3 guidelines for speaking: Appropriate varieties

 

Objective
 

Here is an objective for learning appropriate varieties for speaking in Stage 3:

 

    To control common varieties of the language: formal and informal registers and other important social varieties

Strategies
 

Here are some strategies for learning appropriate varieties for speaking in Stage 3:

 
  • Review

    Review insights gained through listening and reading and try to incorporate them into your speech.

  • Analysis

    Analyze social situations of everyday life and how people act in them. Try to identify typical scripts. Identify variations of scripts based on differences in social relationships among the participants.

  • Practice

    Use role-play techniques to practice playing appropriate roles in different social situations. Practice telephone etiquette and office etiquette.

  • Asking for correction

    Convince a language associate (LA) or other friends in the society that you really want to be corrected if you use inappropriate or stigmatized varieties of speech in a social situation.
