Esta gramática popular presenta la estructura del zapoteco del istmo (o diidxazá) en una forma sencilla para documentar algo de su riqueza. Se espera que ayude a los zapotecos del istmo a comprender que, al igual que cualquier lengua del mundo, su lengua materna tiene una estructura gramatical, y también que ayude a los hablantes del español a entender cómo se forman las palabras y las frases del diidxazá, puesto que su estructura es muy distinta a la del español.

This practical grammar presents the structure of Isthmus Zapotec (or Diidxazá) in a simple form to document some of the richness of the language. It is intended to help Isthmus Zapotec speakers understand that their language has structure like every other language of the world, and also to aid Spanish speakers in learning how words and phrases are formed in Isthmus Zapotec, since the structure is very different from that of Spanish.

La gramática consta de tres partes. La Parte I sirve como una introducción a la gramática en general y también trata acerca de los hablantes y del alfabeto usado para escribir los ejemplos. En la Parte II empieza la parte principal de la gramática. Se presentan las clases de palabras, cómo se forman y cómo se usan. La Parte III presenta las oraciones, incluyendo construcciones complejas. Finalmente, se presentan varios textos en diidxazá para dar una idea más amplia de cómo las oraciones se combinan para formar párrafos.

The grammar consists of three parts. Part I serves as an introduction to the whole grammar, and also deals with the speakers of the language and the alphabet used in writing the examples. Part II begins the main grammar. Each word class is presented, detailing how the words are formed and how they are used. Part III presents the various types of sentences, including complex constructions. Finally, various texts are included to demonstrate how sentences are combined to form paragraphs in a discourse.
