Launch of SIL Bangladesh's new website

SIL works alongside language communities as they discover how to harness the power of their language to address challenges and reach their goals.

(September 2016) SIL Bangladesh announces the launch of its new website. This new site—which is mobile friendly for handheld devices—provides updated information about the on-going efforts of local communities as they achieve their development goals while retaining their ethnolinguistic identities.

Bangladesh's 41 languages bring a rich diversity to the country. SIL language development and research teams use linguistics, literacy, anthropology and translation to assist communities in their own language development.

Major sections of new site:

  • Language and Education: Language and culture are inextricably interwoven. This section addresses multilingual education, local language dictionary and orthography development, sociolinguistics survey, and adult literacy. Using or working with a language requires a good understanding of the culture that is associated with and expressed through that language.
  • Development: Community ownership is a vital key to sustainability. SIL serves to enable language communities to identify and meet their own needs.

Learning circles: SIL Bangladesh works to train and build capacity among community volunteers, and monitors groups on a regular basis.
Youth development: Generation Next Group promotes good citizenship by empowering young people with collaboration and problem-solving skills in order to support their communities.
