SIL's dedication to language development past and present
(July 2011) SIL personnel have been recognized for designing maps that illustrate important facts about the world’s languages. In 2010 the SIL mapping team received a commendation from the body which oversees the John C. Bartholomew Award for Small Scale Mapping. This led to an invitation to present a poster at the 2011 General Assembly of the International Cartographic Association in Paris and subsequently at the 2011 Esri International User Conference in San Diego.
SIL Chief Cartographer Irene Tucker and graphic designer Barb Alber collaborated on a poster which was awarded third place in the category of “Best Cartographic Design: Map Series or Atlas – In-House Copy” at the Esri event. The poster features a selection of maps from the Sixteenth Edition of Ethnologue, Languages of the World, a comprehensive reference volume cataloging all the world’s 6,909 known living languages. Available both in print and online, the current edition of the Ethnologue includes 208 colored maps showing the location and distribution of languages.
Esri produces geographic information system (GIS) technology to solve problems on local, regional, national and global scales. SIL uses Esri’s ArcGIS software to map languages throughout the world.
