This book is an introduction to phonology in general, and a very brief introduction to the ideas addressed by various phonological theories, including generative phonology, underspecification theory, autosegmental phonology, feature theory, phonemics, and CV phonology.

Unlike many other phonology textbooks, it does not present theory in the same order that one might apply it. Instead, it starts with simple processes that do not involve a great deal of phonetic detail, and gradually works toward more complex phonetic processes.

It includes exercises for students (with answers) with data from many different languages; this edition also includes background information for instructors. Although it can be used with students who are enrolled in a concurrent course in phonetics, it works better if students have previously taken an articulatory phonetics course.
