Un día un pinacate se encontraba sentado
en la vereda.[1] Al verlo, el coyote se lo quiso comer; pero el pinacate, al
fin más listo, hizo como que estaba oyendo algo bajo el
suelo.[2] El coyote, intrigado, le preguntó qué
oía. El pinacate, engañando al coyote, le dijo que los
que vivían bajo la tierra decían que iban a matar a
todo el que defecara en la vereda. El coyote huyó y el
pinacate corrió a un agujero para esconderse.
Así se salvó del coyote.

(Eleodes spp.) es un escarabajo grande, negro, que no
vuela y que viaja con la cabeza inclinada hacia abajo y el abdomen
elevado. Puede descargar una substancia que huele feo cuando lo
molestan.

One day Stinkbug was on the road.[1] Coyote saw
him and wanted to eat him, but Stinkbug, who was the smarter one,
pretended that he was hearing something below the surface of the
ground.[2] Coyote was puzzled by this, and asked him what he heard.
Stinkbug fooled Coyote by telling him that those who lived
underground said that they were going to kill every animal that
defecated on the road. Coyote fled when he heard this and Stinkbug
ran into a hole to hide.
[Note 1] The stinkbug
(Eleodes spp.) is a large, black, flightless beetle that
travels with its head down and its abdominal end raised. It may
release a foul-smelling substance when disturbed.
[Note 2] Coyotes commonly
defecate in the middle of roads.
