Overview
SIL Peru
Members of SIL, motivated by a love for God and man, seek to serve the minority language communities of Peru. In coordination with the Peruvian government SIL requests permission from the native communities to live among them and learn the local language. SIL then works together with members of the community to preserve and promote respect for the local language and culture by offering training in literature production, pedagogy, and translation principles, as well as partnering in other linguistic and community development projects. SIL goals include:
- Production of a phonology and grammar of each language in which members work.
- Publication of linguistic and anthropological research.
- Development of literacy and bilingual education materials in the vernacular in collaboration with the Ministry of Education.
- Translation of literature of high moral value, including the Scriptures, laws pertinent to native community needs, and the Declaration of Human Rights.
- Partnering in health and community development projects, including assistance in training.
- Offering training to the native communities in linguistic and translation principles, literature production and promotion, the use of computers, and the preparation of audiovisual materials for use on radio and TV.
- Offering courses to university students or others interested in cross-cultural service in field linguistics, learning an unwritten language, anthropology and intercultural studies.
Who do we work with?
SIL Peru partners with the language groups, local authorities, the Peruvian government, other NGOs, and Christian churches on matters of common interest that benefit the native communities.
