SIL linguist documents endangered languages in Papua New Guinea (June 2012) Because every language and culture is part of the mosaic of humanity, SIL is concerned for endangered languages and the communities that speak those languages. SIL linguist Dr. Ken McElhanon recently undertook a project entitled, "Comparative dictionary and digital recordings for Huon Peninsula languages." The research was funded by a Documenting Endangered Languages (DEL) fellowship provided by the US National Endowment for the Humanities and the National Science Foundation. SIL linguists contribute to new book on metaphors in endangered languages (June 2012) Endangered Metaphors, a book recently published by John Benjamins and edited by Anna Idström and Elisabeth Piirainen, explores the unique imagery and figures of speech found in a selection of the world’s endangered languages. National Academy of Sciences publishes observations of SIL anthropologist (December 2011) In an article published this week in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, SIL anthropologist Dr. Thomas Headland and Cornell University ecology professor Dr. Harry W. Greene have combined their expertise in herpetology and understanding of hunter-gatherer societies to gain insight into the historical relationship between humans and giant snakes.
