Yakan Texts

This volume contains twenty-one fully analyzed Yakan texts, collected on the island of Basilan in the Sulu Archipelago, Philippines, between 1971 and 2000 as part of on-going fieldwork. Yakan belongs to the Sama-Badjaw subgroup of the Malayo-Polynesian family of Austronesian languages, spoken by approximately 100,000 people.

The collection contains a selection of Yakan texts representing a variety of genre including traditional narratives, first-person narratives, procedures, explanations, exhortations, epistles, court proceedings, wedding negotiations, poetry, and riddles.

Each text is presented in a four-line interlinearized format composed of an orthographic representation, a morpheme analysis, a gloss for each morpheme, and a free translation. A short introduction gives information about the Yakan people, the orthographic representation, presentation of data, and the English translation. Three appendices provide additional details about case marking, pronouns, and deictics.

This collection is a companion volume to the Yakan-English Dictionary (Behrens 2002) and A Grammar of Yakan (Brainard and Behrens 2002), also available from this outlet.
