Celebrating 50 years in Asia
Fifty years ago SIL began work in the Philippines at the invitation of Ramon Magsaysay. An agreement was signed between SIL and the Philippine Department of Education on February 28, 1953. Fifty years later, SIL has produced 3500 books and articles in and about the languages of the cultural communities of the Philippines. The Philippines has recognized this contribution to the nation in a series of 12 commemorative postage stamps featuring ethnic designs of the cultural minorities.
Education Secretary Edilberto C. De Jesus writes:
"At the 50th Golden Jubilee Anniversary of SIL Philippines DepEd extends its appreciation and congratulations to the members of SIL for their dedication and commitment to provide access to literacy and literature to the cultural communities. SIL seeks not only to serve but to empower Filipinos to take leadership in such endeavors in their own communities and throughout Asia."
