SIL Language Freeware

A centralized location to download SIL's freely distributable language software bundles.

SIL Freeware CD-ROMs provide a way for people to obtain and redistribute the software that SIL has produced or facilitated for language work worldwide. The software contained on these CD-ROM images is copyrighted by SIL International. By downloading and using these files you agree to comply with the terms in the SIL Language Freeware End User License Agreement.

SIL Language Freeware, Discs 1 and 2

The SIL Freeware disks contain SIL computer applications developed for fieldworkers. For some, certain accessories are used with the SIL application. The CD-ROM image contains everything needed to run the SIL applications, including the accessories. The master installer for the CD-ROM will automatically set up the accessory applications needed by an SIL application.

Note: The download files for an individual application do not include the accessory software which may be needed in conjunction with that application.

There are two versions of Disc 1:

  • Disc 1 Standard Edition (SE) and
  • Disc 1 Bible Translators Edition (BTE).

Disc 1 BTE contains the same software as Disc 1 SE, plus tools to support Bible translation. If you do not want these BTE tools, download Disc 1 SE.

Disc 2 contains other software tools useful in language research. Disc 1 and Disc 2 are independent; you do not need to order or download both disks if you are interested only in using an application from one of the disks.

IMPORTANT: These files are very large, self-extracting zipped files made with maximum compression. Close other programs to have maximum memory available for the extraction process.

If you do not have the bandwidth to make downloading these files practical, you may purchase Disc 1 SE, CD-ROM containing the files for the price of the media, shipping, and handling.

Choose one of the following files depending on whether you want to burn a CD-ROM or if you only want to install it on your computer.

  • This ISO file, when unzipped, can be dropped into most CD-ROM burning software and is then immediately ready to burn. This file is of little use without CD-ROM burning software.
    1. Click on SE Disc 1 CD Image (589 MB, MD5 hash: 0ed56abeb6beca2ab5f45294e440cc8f) and save to your hard drive.
    2. Run the self extracting zip to create the iso file
    3. Use the iso file to burn a CD-ROM
  • Intended for installing only, don't use this one to make a distributable CD-ROM. Create a folder on your hard drive, extract, and install.
    1. Click on SE Disc 1 Files (589 MB, MD5 hash: 61fddb03b12d44b2bdfc92ba8b1b4455) and save to your hard drive.
    2. Run the self extracting zip
    3. Install

SIL Software Catalog Selections

A subset of the software offered in the SIL Software Catalog, these are experimental software products that may be useful for language projects but are installed and used at the end user’s own risk.

The CD-ROM image file contains a copy of a portion of the SIL web site and would be useful for making CD-ROMs for people who do not have good web access. It should be noted that these CD-ROM images are large and you will need good bandwidth to download them.

Individual software products are also downloadable and may be more up-to-date than the CD-ROM image at any time.
