TTAdopter Font Conversion Utility

TTAdopter takes orphan TrueType® fonts and "adopts" them into a family of fonts, giving them a new home (a "suitcase") and a new name. This allows a set of fonts to work as a proper font family so it will be listed only once in application font menus and have each style (bold, italic, bold italic) available by choosing its name.

This utility was designed primarily to allow fonts generated with TypeCaster (the SIL TrueType Font Compiler) to be used on the Macintosh. It can also be used successfully with other "well-behaved" TrueType fonts, but no guarantees! Note: If you are wanting to adopt (or merge) fonts you have created with Altsys Fontographer®, you should use Style Merger® (which comes with Fontographer) instead.

Before running TT Adopter, your fonts must be prepared for adoption. If you are using fonts generated from TypeCaster (or any PC TrueType fonts), the fonts must be copied to your Macintosh using Apple File Exchange, PC Exchange or some other utility. If you are wanting to adopt fonts already in Macintosh format, they must be taken out of any suitcases first (double-click to open the suitcase, then drag the font out of the suitcase) or TT Adopter cannot see them. Note that (unlike Style Merger) TT Adopter cannot merge Macintosh bitmap fonts into families; it also will not preserve any kerning information in the original fonts.
