You can change an individual occurrence of a marker in a database. For example, you might change a particular gloss field's marker from \ge to \re. The way you select a different marker for a data field is related to the way that you entered it originally.

1. Move the insertion point to the beginning of the data field (e.g., by clicking in the data pane).
2. Press the Backspace key (Macintosh: press the delete key).
3. Type the desired marker or select it from the list.
4. Press the Enter key (Macintosh: press the return key).

You can "rename" a marker everywhere it occurs in the open databases. For example, to convert an existing lexical database so you can export it using the Multi-Dictionary Formatter (MDF), you might change the "name" of the English gloss marker from \gl to \ge. In Shoebox, you cannot use the Replace command to change all occurrences of a marker. Instead, you modify the marker's properties.

1. In the marker pane, right-click the marker (Macintosh: hold down the option key when you click the marker).
2. In the Marker box, change the marker. If needed, enter the Field Name, select the appropriate Language Encoding, and modify any of its other properties.
3. Click OK.
4. Click Yes.
