The Linguist's Shoebox

In Shoebox, each language encoding defines the characteristics

• of a particular language (e.g., French)
• that is written using a particular script (e.g., Roman script)
• that is implemented on the computer by a set of fonts (e.g., Arial, Courier New, Times New Roman, etc.)
• that contain a particular character set (e.g., ANSI)

Here are some of the features that are language-dependent:

• entering data using the keyboard
• matching characters (e.g., disregarding case) when finding data
• sorting database records

Each data field marker is associated with a language encoding. From the Marker Properties dialog box, you can choose Language Properties to modify its language encoding. Shoebox expects to find all the language encoding files for a project in the settings folder. From the Project menu, choose Language Encodings.
