Release notes for TeXgX (most recent first)
Known problems and unfinished features
- Zoom commands in should be more intelligent about the part of the page to be displayed
- Auto Mode is not adequately implemented
- does not detect changes in sub-files (\input files) and re-typeset
- doesn't handle errors and incomplete files well
- Several menu commands are permanently disabled because the features are not implemented
- Revert to Saved (you can close without saving and re-open, as a workaround)
- By Page Setup
- Preferences (to set default editor font, .fmt file, etc)
- Typeset File (to typeset without opening the .tex file)
- Named instances of GX variation fonts are not supported (though you can directly specify
values for the variation axes)
- It would be nice to support TIFF files as well as the graphic formats currently supported
(EPS, PICT, GX picture)
- If you open a file, and the *only* changes you make involve "inline input" (in Chinese or
Japanese script), then TeXgX doesn't notice the changes and won't save the file
- Replace All is slow if replacing many items in a large file, and it can't be interrupted
TeXgX v1.1b3 (10-Sep-96)
- fixed a serious problem with scroll bars on edit windows
- edit windows once again default to wrapping (some day there'll be a preference!)
- Undo command now undoes the entire action after Replace All or Indent/Unindent
TeXgX v1.1b2 (06-Aug-96)
- improved Find command, less likely to fail with large files; much faster, too
- sorry, but regular expressions aren't supported yet
- handling of right-to-left scripts in edit windows is improved
- edit windows don't wrap by default; gives much better performance with large files
- missing feature: the wrap state of a file is not yet saved
TeXgX v1.1b1 (13-Jul-96; this version didn't make it to the Web site)
- Major new feature: added support for .TFM-based fonts as well as GX metrics
- standard Plain TeX, LaTeX, etc., can be used with their default fonts!
- TeXgX should now be able to typeset "standard" TeX documents, provided the fonts
are available on your system
- Read Me Second.tex file is updated to reflect this functionality
- new sample file CM-test.tex
- LaTeX is "supported" (meaning it works) but not included in the distribution
- implemented subfolders of the application folder for .fmt's, .tfm's, etc.
- note that \dump now writes the .fmt file into the "TeX formats" folder
- improved GX font access to speed up jobs with many different fonts
- updated Plain.fmt to the latest available version
- created TrueType versions of common CM and AMS fonts (separate product; free for
non-commercial use), suitable for use with TeXgX and normal Plain/LaTeX styles
TeXgX v1.0b8 (27-Jun-96; not widely released)
- enabled inline input for double-byte scripts in edit windows
- tested briefly with Japanese Language Kit 1.2, but feedback is welcome
- fixed bug where \show\picfile would report "[unknown extension!]"
- increased TeX's main memory size from 64K to 256K, and some other capacities
- note that Plain.fmt and any other .fmt files must be recompiled
- added "encodings" to Font Information window (numeric only for now)
- "encoding" is needed primarily for non-Roman scripts with Language Kits
- you can say things like (Arabic language kit example):
\font\arb="Baghdad:encoding=4" at 18pt
- tested (briefly) with LaTeX2e
- runs fine, but font availability & naming is a problem for standard styles
TeXgX v1.0b7 (25-Jun-96)
- fixed bug which could lead to crash when saving a text file
- added workaround for bug in printing emboldened fonts via PostScript
TeXgX v1.0b6 (07-May-96)
Earlier versions were not made widely available.
