International Mother Language Day 2013 (February 2013) Each year on 21 February, the value of local languages is recognized with International Mother Language Day (IMLD). First designated by UNESCO in 1999, the annual event provides an opportunity to promote linguistic diversity and focus on a number of issues related to communities’ mother tongues. SIL represented at meetings of UN Commission for Social Development (February 2013) Dave Pearson and Maralee Gutierrez will represent SIL at the 51st Session of the United Nations Commission for Social Development. Delegates to the 6-15 February event will focus on how government agencies and NGOs can best support communities in their efforts to achieve goals such as poverty eradication and equitable access to employment. Call for papers: 4th International Conference on Language and Education (January 2013) The Asia Multilingual Education Working Group (MLE WG) has opened the call for papers, panels and workshop proposals for the 4th International Conference on Language and Education. The theme for the conference is “Multilingual Education for ALL in Asia and the Pacific–Policies, Practices and Processes.” The event will take place 6-8 November in Bangkok, Thailand. SIL partner launches new website (January 2013) One of SIL’s newest partners, SIL LEAD, has announced the launch of its website. SIL-LEAD.org provides a well-designed introduction to the organization’s work and to issues of language, education and development. Founded in 2011, SIL LEAD is an independent organization that works in partnership with SIL and other NGOs and government agencies.
