Multilingualism presentation at E-9 summit in Nigeria (June 2010) UNESCO and the Government of Nigeria organized the Eighth E-9 Ministerial Review Meeting on Literacy for Development, which was held 21–24 June in Abuja, Nigeria. The theme of the meeting, “Literacy for Development,” focused on how to cut adult illiteracy rates in half by 2015, particularly among girls and women. SIL joins observance of International Mother Language Day 2010 (February 2010) During the eleventh annual observance of International Mother Language Day, SIL representatives participated in celebrations in the Philippines, at the Bangladesh Embassy in Washington DC and at UNESCO headquarters in Paris. International Mother Language Day provides an opportunity to recognize linguistic diversity and the importance of multilingual education. Haiti earthquake response (January 2010) Executive Director Freddy Boswell and President John Watters express their grief and concern on behalf of SIL International over the loss of life and the devastating injuries suffered by the people of Haiti. Central African Republic awards the Chevalier dans l'Ordre de la Medaille de la Reconnaissance Centrafricaine (December 2009) During the Central African Republic (CAR) Independence Day celebrations, President François Bozizé awarded two representatives of SIL with the medal of recognition for SIL's partnership with ethnolinguistic minorities in the CAR. Receiving the awards on behalf of SIL-CAR were Director Rolf Buehler and Administrative Assistant Blaise Yangue.
