Training
Language and culture learning in multicultural contexts requires careful preparation. There are skills to learn, knowledge to gain, and attitudes to develop, all of which contribute to successful learning. SIL offers basic training aimed at equiping people with the necessary skills, knowledge and attitudes to be successful self-directed learners. Coaching
Language learners benefit from the advice and perspective of an experienced coach. Even highly motivated self-directed learners may tire of old activities and lose interest over time. The loss of momentum can lead a person to "plateau" at a less than fluent level. Language and culture learning coaches are specialists who provide new ideas, motivation and accountability to help learners keep on track. Coaches may also play a role in efforts to revitalize endangered languages, help set standards and best practices, and advocate for language and culture learning within organizations. Resources
Many language and culture learning resources exist for the self-directed learner. For commonly taught languages the choices are extensive, including courses, books, software programs, web-based lessons, podcasts, newspapers, movies, TV, social media, videos, etc. For less commonly taught languages, locating and evaluating resources can be more challenging. Learners may need to develop their own resources. SIL assists language development workers in locating, evaluating and choosing resources that meet their needs.
