SIL tools for language documentation presented at Charting Vanishing Voices workshop (June 2012) Scholars and digital archivists from a variety of institutions and organizations are coming together 29-30 June for a workshop entitled “Charting Vanishing Voices: A Collaborative Workshop to Map Endangered Oral Cultures.” The event is being held at Cambridge University’s Centre for Research in the Arts, Social Sciences and Humanities (CRASSH). Martin Raymond of SIL’s Non-Roman Script Initiative will introduce several new tools for language documentation developed by SIL. Pioneering study on endangered language families co-authored by SIL researcher (April 2012) Groundbreaking research on the vitality of language families is the subject of an article recently published in Language by Dr. Douglas Whalen, Vice President of Research for Haskins Laboratories and Distinguished Professor at The City University of New York, and Dr. Gary Simons, Chief Research Officer for SIL International. With every language that ceases to be spoken, the richness of the world’s linguistic diversity decreases, cultural heritage is weakened and important knowledge is lost forever. Endangered Languages Week at the University of Texas at Arlington (November 2011) The Department of Linguistics and TESOL* at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) has arranged a series of events to raise awareness of languages in peril. UTA Endangered Languages Week events will take place on the UTA campus 31 October through 4 November. The event is free and open to the public. Ethiopian Ministry of Education and SIL Ethiopia sign cooperative agreement (September 2011) A new Memorandum of Understanding was signed on 23 August by State Minister of Education Fuad Ibrahim Omer, on behalf of the Government of the Federal Democratic Republic of Ethiopia, and Dr. Alemayehu Hailu, Director of SIL Ethiopia. This agreement formalizes the commitment to continued partnership between the Government of Ethiopia and SIL Ethiopia.
