Choosing a font size

Introduction

Using the proper font size is especially important to make reading easier for

  • beginning readers
  • people with poor eyesight, or
  • people in poor lighting conditions.

Font size is measured in points.

Guidelines

Here are some guidelines to follow when you choose a font size:

  • Use large fonts (14-20 points) for

    • beginning readers, and
    • people with poor eyesight.
  • Use 10-12 point fonts for

    • advanced readers, and
    • people with normal eyesight.
  • Gradually decrease font size as materials become progressively more advanced.
  • Experiment with different fonts. Different fonts may appear different in size, even when the point size is the same.
