How to make a word slide

 

Materials
 

Here are the materials needed to make a word slide:

 
  • Index cards or pieces of heavy paper
  • Scissors or sharp-pointed cutting instrument
Steps
  Follow these steps to make a word slide:
 
  1. Cut an index card or similar piece of paper into four short pieces.

  2. Print on each piece of paper the beginning and ending letters of a word that could be completed with any of several vowels. Leave plenty of space to insert a vowel.
    Example:

    b _ t could be completed with a, e, i, or u

  3. Print the vowels the long way on a narrow strip of card or paper that will fit in the space left on the first card for the vowel.

  4. Cut two slits in the first piece of paper as follows:
    • Lengthwise
    • Above and below the space left for the vowel.

  5. Fit the narrow strip into the slits so that one vowel at a time shows between the letters written on the card.

  6. Slide the strip to make a word with each of the vowels.
Alternatives
 
  • Vary the

    • consonants or consonant clusters rather than vowels
    • beginning or the end of words, or
    • syllables within words.
