Selecting literacy trainees

Introduction

Selecting trainees to meet the staffing needs of a literacy program is not an exact science. You will have to do a certain amount of experimentation to develop a good training program for your situation.

Guidelines

Here are some guidelines to follow when you select literacy trainees:

  • You need to interact with local leaders about the rationale for training literacy personnel.
  • You need to consult with community leaders regarding the selection of literacy personnel.

    Reason:

These leaders often have a good idea of who will be a good teacher or other literacy worker, even though such a person may not appear to the outsider to have the technical qualifications needed.

  • You need to determine who will select the trainees.
  • You need to pay particular attention to the gender issue.

    Example:

In many cultures, there are potential problems in having women teaching men or men teaching all-women classes. Consult with local leaders to see how to handle this issue.

Things to do
Here are the things to do when you select trainees:

  • Specify the qualifications for trainees.
    See:

    Criteria for selecting literacy personnel

  • Decide the number of trainees needed for the training activity.
    Tip:

You need to train about 30 percent more people in any training category than you expect to need in your program because of attrition.

  • Select the trainees.
  • Determine if those selected for training are willing and available.
  • If appropriate, determine the wages and any other remuneration for the trainees.
