Costing survey trips

Introduction

You may need to do survey work to evaluate such things as

  • the general need for literacy
  • the existence of schools
  • potential literacy sites
  • potential teachers
  • motivation for literacy
  • best sites for a pilot program, and
  • the presence of institutional resources.
Things to do
Here are things to do when you estimate the cost of survey trips:

  • Estimate the number of trips to be made.
  • Estimate the number of people who will be traveling.
  • Estimate travel costs to reach the areas to be surveyed.
  • Estimate the amount of time required to do the indicated tasks.
  • Estimate living costs in the area to be surveyed.
  • Estimate materials and equipment needed to travel and to be in the area.
  • Estimate cost of special equipment needed such as tape recorders, computers, travel and camping gear, and personal effects.
  • Estimate the cost of gifts, honoraria, or tips you will need to pay for hospitality, cooperation, or services rendered.
  • Estimate the cost to hire and train local people to assist in these processes.
