Reference

Bowling, Mary Ruth. 1976. "Literacy and the typewriter." READ: Promoting Literacy and Literature. (Also published in Suharno and Pike 1976.) Interest level: lay specialist.

Summary

Taught typing (at the request of several SIL teams) to eight language assistants with levels ranging from preliterate to four years of schooling. Students were motivated by the novelty of typing and the desire to help the SIL teams. They believed typing skills were a sign of prestige.

Bowling found that preliterate students learned to type accurately. Suggests a plan for teaching typing and literacy simultaneously and comments on course values. Students learned to type and felt a new sense of unity as Indonesian citizens. They developed more fluency in Bahasa Indonesian and became accustomed to seeing their national language in print. Students also expanded their knowledge as they typed, not only in their mother tongue languages but also in their national language.
