Reference

Gordon, Raymond G. 1989. "A group dynamic method of learning to read." Notes on Literacy.

Summary

Provides a written description of an informal approach to teaching reading in the mother tongue to Native Americans literate in English. Approach incorporates repeated reading in which the instructor reads a text and then students join in. Author used this approach in the context of the translation project he was working on. Instructor was the translator, the text was translated portions of the Bible, and the students were language assistants. Student response was good in terms of both achievement and enjoyment. Gives a detailed description of the technique, some cautions, and discusses ways to adapt the approach.
