Gudschinsky 1968

Reference

Gudschinsky, Sarah C. 1968.Literacy seminar notes. Transcription of a seminar given by Sarah Gudschinsky on literacy. Ukarumpa, Papua New Guinea: Summer Institute of Linguistics, Literacy Department. (See also Gudschinsky 1973.)

Summary

Deals mainly with practical aspects of literacy programs. Talks about

  • orthography
  • teaching, and
  • primer constructions.

"That the beginning of a literacy program is the provision of something that's worth reading. Literature that is worth reading, that people want to read is the beginning of motivation. Don't teach your people to read unless there is something for them to read when they come to the end of the process ... rather than the very general good: there is some prestige attached to being able to read" (pages 1 and following).

Evaluation

Provides some good comments and insights.
