Summary

Points out the ideal alphabet is realistically not always possible, where each significant sound is written with a single symbol and only one symbol is used for each significant sound. Discusses some factors that influence decision making. Looks at the use of digraphs and diacritics to represent sounds when there are insufficient suitable letters. Concludes with suggested principles to apply when selecting symbols to represent the sounds of an ethnic language.
