Trainum and Snyder 1989

Reference

Trainum, Mike, and David Snyder. 1989. "An introduction to the Shell project." READ: Promoting Literacy and Literature.

Summary

In May, a number of linguists, literacy specialists, and other technical support personnel in the Papua New Guinea Branch of SIL began working to develop a Shell Literature Project. The goal was to research and develop a method for making books that were

  • low in cost
  • easy to produce, and
  • adaptable across a broad range of language groups.

A book shell, as defined in the Shell Project, is a book completely ready to be duplicated except for the text. Pictures and illustrations are in place, margins are set, and pages are laid out in proper order and number. Once the text is translated and added, the Shell book can be made into a stencil and printed on a Gestetner duplicator or silk-screen.
