  • Analysis

    Look at items in your Text Portfolio (see techniques below) to see what they tell you about the sociocultural themes listed below, such as social relations, daily life, values, and beliefs.

  • Practice

    Write a letter or essay using the items you analyzed as a model. Try to make appropriate allusions or indirect references. Ask a language associate (LA) to read it and to tell you what he or she thinks you were talking about and where you were unclear or inappropriate.

  • Selective attention

    Pay special attention to the way the people express emotions, accomplishments, or dissatisfaction with a situation or person. Also note other areas of diversity. Keep trying to conform your style to that standard, not your ingrained home cultural style.
