Stage 3 guidelines for reading: Grammar

 

Objectives
 

Here are some grammar objectives for Stage 3 for reading:

 

  • To be able to read material that is grammatically complex, as found in academic or professional writings.

  • Understand subtle nuances in meaning and argumentation conveyed by the grammar. This may be conveyed by a variety of grammatical features, which depend on the language being studied, but which may include

    • Subjective or optative mood of verbs
    • Aspect: perfective versus imperfective
    • Derivational morphology
    • Government or agreement features within sentences
Strategies
 

Here are some grammar strategies for Stage 3 guidelines for reading:

 

  • Advance organization

    Read as much as you can about the grammatical system of the language you are learning. Read about grammatical features common in the family of languages you are learning. A book on linguistic typology will help you understand what types of grammatical features tend to occur together.

  • Analysis

    Analyze the order of elements in different grammatical structures and how they fit together into a system.
