Stage 3 guidelines for speaking: Functions

 

Objectives
 

Here are some functions objectives for Stage 3 learners for speaking:

 
  • To use language to express yourself
  • To use language for all common communication functions, including

    • supporting opinions
    • hypothesizing
    • persuading, and
    • interpreting
  • To develop the ability to use language indirectly as when

  • To use language to find out more about the language and culture
Strategies
 

Here are some functions strategies for Stage 3 guidelines for speaking:

 
  • Review

    Review insights gained through listening and reading and incorporate them into your speech.

  • Analysis

    Analyze the scripts of social situations of everyday life and how people use language to accomplish their purposes. Determine what the real communicative purpose is behind what people say.

  • Practice

    Use role-play techniques to practice accomplishing communicative purposes in different social situations.

  • Asking for correction

    Convince a language associate (LA) or other friends in the society that you really want to be corrected if you act inappropriately in a social situation, specifically if what you say communicates something other than what they think you intended.
