Stage 1 guidelines for speaking: Appropriate varieties

 

Objectives
 

Here are some appropriate varieties objectives for Stage 1 for speaking:

 
  • To memorize sentences and use the most generally acceptable forms with a stranger

    Tip:

    The most useful social role at the beginning is stranger to stranger.

  • To use any other variety that the language associate (LA) tells you is very important, such as male/female markers in speech, or respect toward elders or those of superior rank
Strategies
 

Here are some appropriate varieties strategies for Stage 1 guidelines for speaking:

 
  • Analysis

    Identify the formal markers showing register in the language.

  • Practice

    Imagine yourself in a context where you actually talk to people with whom the variety you are using is appropriate, or do role play so the words and sentences you say are in a meaningful context.

  • Ask for help

    Ask a LA explicitly to correct you if you say something awkward or impolite.
