    To start, as you learn categories in the new language, thinking in those terms. Build up a new network of relationships among objects, as the people in this speech community use them. Use these new relationships in your speech when you can.

  • Analysis

    Keep lists of these different categories of vocabulary and look for relationships among them. At Stage 1 you will not be able to get all the subtle differences, but you can start to discover the differences in vocabulary referring to concrete objects.

  • Practice

    Concentrate on meaning when using vocabulary-building techniques to help you start to think in the language instead of translating. Try to think in the language when you speak.

  • Use memorized material appropriately in real communication situations. Get the language associate (LA) to accompany you sometimes and give you feedback. This may make you nervous at first, but will be of great help in the long run.
  • Pay attention when people look blank or confused or when they correct you when you use a word in a way they did not expect. Ask the LA afterwards about that word.
