Stage 3 guidelines for speaking: Cultural framework

 

Objectives
 

Here are some cultural framework objectives for Stage 3 for speaking:

 
  • To investigate important life passages people go through at different stages of their lives
  • To continue investigating the structure of society and how this affects the way they speak to each other in the day to day social situations.

    Continue to investigate how people relate to each other on the basis of their place in the society and learn the vocabulary associated with such situations.

  • To investigate beliefs and values that motivate people to act in a certain way
  • To find out symbols important in the society and how these are reflected in their arts and literature
  • To use the knowledge you gain in these areas you are accepted and generally fit in with the culture and society.
Strategies
 

Here are some cultural framework strategies for Stage 3 guidelines for speaking:

 
  • Review

    Review insights gained through listening and reading and incorporate them into your speech. Correctly use local specific terminology rather than broad statements of description.

  • Analysis

    Analyze social situations of everyday life and how people act in them. Identify typical scripts. Identify variations of scripts based on differences in social relationships among participants.

  • Indirect questioning

    Find ways to ask indirect questions to gain insight into the way people think and feel.

  • Practice

    Use role-play techniques to appropriately apply your insights into social relationships and scripts.

  • Hypothesis testing

    When you form a hypothesis about an important aspect of the social structure and how it is reflected in the behavior, check it out with a friend or language associate (LA).
