Editing the content of literacy materials

by Leah B. Walter (compiler)
Trudy Stewart (compiler)

Introduction

Content editing refers to checking literacy materials to make sure that what has been written is accurate, clear, and appropriate for the intended audience.

Things to do
Here are the things to do when you edit the content of literacy materials:

  • Make sure the subject matter and the way it is presented fits the audience for which it is intended.
  • Be sure the content is culturally, politically, and ideologically appropriate and does not offend, shame, or ridicule anyone.
  • Check to see that new ideas and words are explained or illustrated so that readers can understand them.
  • Make sure that facts are accurate.
  • Check to see that everything is included to make the material complete and useable.
  • Make sure that information is accurate and consistent.
  • Make sure there are no conflicting or ambiguous statements.
