How to make a flip chart

Introduction

Flip charts are often used instead of individual books in group situations. If you decide to produce multiple copies of a flip chart to use instead of individual books, you may need more sophisticated printing methods than hand printing. Although having charts printed is more expensive than producing them by hand, it is still more economical to produce, for example, 100 charts than 5,000 books.

Materials

Here are the materials needed to make a flip chart:

  • Premade blank flip charts (may be purchased in most countries) or large sheets of paper
  • Heavy cardboard
  • Marking pens
  • Materials to bind the pages

    • rings
    • string
    • glue
    • tacks
    • pole or stick, or
    • wooden slats.
Steps
Follow these steps to make a flip chart:

  1. Print the front of each page with a large version of the text and illustrations.
  2. Collate the pages, including as a last “page” a piece of heavy cardboard if you want the flip chart to stand up.
  3. Bind the pages together at the top.
    Examples:
    • Make holes at the top of the pages and insert rings or string to attach them all together.
    • Tack the pages securely to a pole, stick, or slat.
    • Punch holes in the pages. Place them between two slats or strips of heavy cardboard that have matching holes drilled in them. Bolt or tie them all together.
Alternatives
Here are some alternate ways to make a flip chart:

  1. Print a reduced version of the text and illustrations on the back.
    1. Print the front of each page as above.
    2. Print a small version of the first page on the back of the cover page.
    3. Print a small version of the second page on the back of the first page.
    4. Continue in this manner with all the pages.
    5. Collate and bind as shown above.
  2. Print notes on the back.
    1. Print the front of each page as above.
    2. Print appropriate notes for the first page on the back of the cover page.
    3. Print appropriate notes for the second page on the back of the first page.
    4. Continue in this manner with all the pages.
    5. Collate and bind as shown above.
