How to prepare to print with a silk-screen printer

Introduction

Printing with a silk-screen printer involves some preparation. The most important step is to attach the stencil properly to the printer.

See:

How to print on fabric with a silk-screen printer for all the steps involved.

Guidelines

Here are some guidelines to follow when you prepare to print with a silk-screen printer:

  • Use old paper for the first trial copies.

    See:

How to print trial copies with a silk-screen printer

  • Make sure that

    • the stencil is in the position you want it, and
    • the "face-up" or right side of the stencil is toward the fabric screen.
  • Experiment to find out what works best with the materials you have and the people with whom you are working.
Steps
Follow these steps to prepare to print with a silk-screen printer:

  1. Lift the screen frame.
  2. Are there paper guides on the base of the printer to show where to place the paper?
    • If no, put strips of tape on the base to serve as paper guides.
    • If yes, continue with step 3.
  3. Put a sheet of paper on the base, using the paper guides to center it carefully.
  4. Tear off the backing sheet of a stencil along the perforated lines if you are using a stencil with a backing sheet.
