Using recorded spelling

Introduction

Recorded spelling can be used

  • as a way to practice spelling words outside of class
  • for private spelling practice
Materials

Here are some materials needed for recorded spelling:

  • Cassette tape
  • Cassette tape recorder
  • Something to write on
  • A writing instrument
Steps
Here are the steps to follow to use recorded spelling:

  1. Ask the learner: "What words do you need to learn to spell?"
  2. Record the spelling list the learner requested.
  3. Use the following format to record 10 words at a time:
    • Say a word.
    • Use the word in a sentence.
    • Repeat the word.
    • Pause long enough for the learner to write the word.
    • Spell each word at the end of every fifth word for a self-check.
  4. The learner listens to the cassette tape, spelling the words during the pauses.
  5. After spelling 5 words, the learner checks that group of words.
