Introduction

Networking can be carried out through a variety of activities.

Things to do
Here are some things to do when you are networking through activities:

  • Develop personal relationships with individuals who are members of institutions with whom you have common interests.
    Tip:
    • Find out about the position and interests of these individuals.
    • Initiate visits with these individuals.
    • Always be well prepared for your visits.
  • Attend events and meetings where you may find people and institutions represented with whom you have common interests.
    Examples:
    • Ceremonies

      • Inaugurations
      • Opening and closing of conferences
      • Commemorations
      • Special days
    • Meetings

      • Conferences
      • Large national seminars
      • Local development association meetings
      • Regular committee meetings of a university department or primary school parent-teacher group
      • Business gatherings
    • Social events

      • Club meetings
      • Church events
  • Write articles for journals, newspapers, and magazines.
    Tip:

Always include a contact name and address in your articles to enable readers to provide feedback.

  • Make formal speeches or presentations about the language program in which you are working.
    Tip:

Be prepared to do this at a moment's notice with a well-structured, self-contained speech.

  • Join associations at local, national, and international levels as a personal or institutional member.
    Reason:

This gives you access to a ready-made network of contacts with similar interests. Educational and development associations will be among the most useful.
