Summary
 

Over 30 percent of the children in the North Solomon's Province now attend the North Solomon's preschool program, known locally as Viles Tok Ples Skul. Is a mother tongue school that seven and eight year old children attend before they go on to Community School. In preschool, children learn to read and write in their mother tongue as well as to develop their language skills. Program includes

 
  • simple mathematics skills
  • cultural studies
  • science
  • health
  • religious instruction, and
  • creative activities such as art, craft, drama, and free play.
 

Learning through play activities and games is an important part of the program. Devotes the first three terms of Year 1 to reading readiness, with reading beginning in the fourth term and continuing through Year 2 of the two-year program. Prereading readiness course includes

 
  • speaking
  • listening
  • visual and manual activities, and
  • preparation for the primer.
 

Gives examples for each type of activity.
