| Summary | |
Focuses on the intrinsic character of academic work in elementary and secondary schools and the way work is experienced by teachers and students in classrooms (page 159). Reviews research in cognitive psychology related to the intellectual demands of tasks contained in the school curriculum, and the complexity of most tasks. Contrasts memory, comprehension, and procedural tasks in relation to meaning and surface features. Emphasizes associations in memory and causality in concepts and events. Also emphasizes the role of schemata in accounting for ambiguities in passages or situations and in making inferences.
Shows how readers use knowledge structures in long-term memory, and structures embedded in the text to guide comprehension. Discusses how academic work is accomplished in the classroom. Also discusses how the classroom shapes the content of the curriculum for all students and for those who find the work difficult. Concludes with an analysis of issues relating to improving instruction and extending current directions of research on teaching.
