Reference

Hogan, Doreen. 1982. "Special considerations for adult literacy work." READ: Promoting Literacy and Literature. Interest level: specialist.

Summary

Adults differ from children in psychological and physiological ways and need separate literacy materials. Is necessary to prepare reading materials specifically for adults, and to make reading and writing activities relevant to adult learners. Motivation to start and willingness to keep going are essential to adult learning. May be best for program to begin with semiliterates, because enthusiasm is more easily sustained and rewards are quicker for students and teachers.
