Summary
 

Summarizes efforts of a traveling literacy team (Alpha) in the Lagoon area near Abidjan. Their job was to help finalize the orthographies and to produce literacy materials for several large language groups. Translations were already in process but literacy was neglected. Outlines suggestions for other literacy workers in Africa to use in developing materials. Suggestions include

 
  • simplicity
  • brevity
  • a proficient mother tongue writer
  • problems with tone marks, and
  • problems of the concept of syllable.
