Summary

Material was taken from a number of lectures and interviews taped in 1981. Interviewees discussed their experiences in relation to training literacy teachers and how they passed on knowledge to the people. In all cases, mother tongue literacy skills were passed on, but the variety of ways in which it occurred makes a fascinating study. Efforts to maintain the self-esteem of all parties concerned were noted in each group.
