534a: Aerophones

Description

Aerophones, or wind instruments, produce sound by the vibration of air. The air may or may not be confined in the instrument.

Aerophones are classified according to how the air is set in motion, which has to do with the kind of mouthpiece used:

  • Blow hole
  • Whistle
  • Single reed
  • Double reed
  • Lip vibrated

Most aerophones are harmonic, meaning they produce a definite pitch. Free aerophones produce an indefinite pitch.
