534c: Chordophones

Description

Chordophones (OCM spells it "cordophones") produce sound by means of a vibrating string. There may be one or more strings attached at both ends on a bearer or soundbox. Chordophones are classified as to the relationship of the strings to the body or resonator.

To classify a specific chordophone, include information about other elements such as the following:

  • Number of strings
  • How they are played (striking, plucking, friction or bowing, blowing)
  • Tuning (pegs or other devices)
  • Presence of frets (low bridges on the neck or body which show the place where the string should be stopped)
  • Presence of moveable bridges
