533t: Musical training and appreciation

Description

Musical training methods and procedures will often vary according to the predominant learning style in a culture and will be influenced by the personal learning/teaching style of the teacher. Music appreciation will be influenced by what constitutes an aesthetic experience within the culture, which may not be based on "beauty" as Westerners consider it.

Transfer of musical knowledge and skills
  1. In what contexts do people learn each style of music?
  2. What are the methods of transfer of musical knowledge and skill (for example, one to one teaching, classroom, formal, informal)?
  3. Are there musicians recognized as teachers? Who are they?
  4. Are there cultural domains in which musical knowledge and skills were taught, which no longer function (for example, initiation rites, societies)?
